1 IN 2 follows filmmaker David Wilkinson’s own experience of a stage 4 bowel cancer diagnosis while exploring the wider issues surrounding the disease, its symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. And, he hopes, it may just save a life.

The documentary also shines a light on the increasing number of younger people being diagnosed with bowel cancer, and the danger of symptoms being dismissed because of age. The film features a bowel surgeon who was herself diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer at just 44 and highlights the many ways the disease can present and the importance of understanding the potential symptoms.

But 1 IN 2 isn’t simply a film about cancer and its treatment. David also sets out to demystify what happens after a diagnosis, showing how advances in cancer treatment have changed the experience for patients compared with previous generations. There are, unsurprisingly, difficult moments, but there are also moments of humour and, above all, hope.

Maggie’s, the Scottish-founded cancer charity, also features in the film, with David choosing to donate all box office income from the screening to the charity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
